Artist and culture curator A$AP Ferg collaborated with his longtime video director Shomi Patwary and Snapple drinks for the short film, A Snapple Corner Story.
Ferg tells ABC Audio that Patwary, who directed his 2013 “Work” video, intentionally “called” him to executive produce and narrate the documentary because of his creative interests outside of music.
“He knows my style. He knows I’m [an] all-around creative at heart. I’m not just a musician,” says Ferg. “But I know how to curate things. I know how to brings things together. I know how to provide a vibe, whether it’s music, whether it’s fashion, whether it’s just the style and the vibe of the room. I just know how to bring it together.”
For A Snapple Corner Story, the Harlem native called on other creatives to help explain the authentic connection between communities and small corner stores and bodegas in New York City. Among those creatives are Blood Orange singer Ian Isiah, photographer Renell Medrano and Bronx-based culinary collective Ghetto Gastro.
“To me, they’re like me. I bridge the gap between the upscale and the streets,” Ferg maintains. “We’re just giving, like, these testimonies on how bodegas [are] a hub to the community and how they helped us during the pandemic when people couldn’t afford certain things.”
