Alicia Keys is training for the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon and she’s decided to blog about it via Refinery29.

The singer, who ran a marathon in Greece in 2007, revealed that she never thought she would sign up for another race but she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to run through the five boroughs. “I just figured running 26.2 miles probably wasn’t something I’d ever want to do again. Well, you know what they say: Never say never,” she writes.

Alicia has a regimen that has her getting up at 5:30 a.m. and training for an hour around 8 a.m., which consists of putting her youngest son, Genesis, in the running stroller and running.  “Getting up early to take care of myself physically and mentally sharpens my focus, my dedication, and my clarity,” she explains.

The singer reveals that she’s using audiobooks during her prep runs. “As much as I love music, what keeps me going on long runs are audiobooks. They’re mentally stimulating and do an incredible job of keeping me engaged. There’s always the next thing happening in the book, the next place the story takes me,” she writes. “I never know what’s coming, and somehow it distracts me enough to get through all those miles without noticing as much.”

So what really inspired her to sign up? “I’m all about breaking mental boundaries, and training for a marathon falls right into the Jedi mind-training I need,” says Alicia, who is also recording her next studio album.

Alicia will be running to support her Keep a Child Alive Foundation, when the marathon takes place on Sunday, November 1.
