All I used to wear was Ralph Lauren: Pharrell maps out his personal style evolution

by

ABC/Adam RoseOther than music, Pharrell is known for his unique sense of style.

But, believe it or not, the “Happy” singer tells Vogue in a video interview that Kelis is the one responsible for helping shape his one-of-a-kind fashion sense.

He explains, “All I used to wear was Ralph Lauren and [Kelis] used to tell me all the time, ‘You have to diversify. You can’t just wear Polo all the time. You know? You have to check out Versace. Check out Prada.'”

As his career as a producer and member of the group N.E.R.D. began to grow, Pharrell says his fashion sense became more influenced by popular culture and his environment, where “being gaudy and being braggadocious was a cool thing to do.”

“Now I’d be incredibly cringed out and embarrassed,” he adds.

“But that duality, that fight between where I come from and then what I felt like I had to prove, it took a long time for that to just bubble down.”
