AMA nominee Ella Mai imagines being in the same room with fellow nominees Beyoncé and Lizzo: “I would be speechless”

by

ABC/Heidi GutmanElla Mai is up for four American Music Awards, and after announcing the nominations Thursday morning in New York City, the “Boo’d Up “singer is thrilled to be in the company of some of her favorite performers.

The British singer is up New Artist of the Year, Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist, Favorite Soul/R&B Song for “Trip” and Favorite Soul/R&B Album for her platinum, self-titled debut album. Mai is competing against Beyoncé and Lizzo for Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist, and she says it would be an incredible moment if they all got to hang out at the awards show.

“I don’t even know what I would say in that situation,” she tells ABC Audio. “I actually met Lizzo the other day and she was super sweet. I went to her show that she had in L.A….I haven’t met Beyonce…if the three us were in the room together, I don’t even know. How do you start that conversation? Like, I have no clue. I would be speechless.”

Mai received two AMA nominations last year, and she’s thrilled to be up for four awards this year.

“It’s crazy. It puts into perspective the year that I’ve had,” she says. “I’m super, super grateful to be recognized and to come back with double the nominations. Even if it was one nomination, I would still be grateful, but to come back with four — it’s pretty crazy season.”

Ella is continuing her Debut Tour next week with two shows in Japan, and another concert in Seoul, Korea. You can see her on TV when the 2019 American Music Awards air live from Los Angeles Sunday, November 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
