American Soul: Watch Don Cornelius convince Gladys Knight to join Soul Train

Annette BrownBET’s upcoming scripted drama, American Soul is giving fans a first look at Kelly Rowland playing Gladys Knight.

In the clip from the forthcoming series, Soul Train visionary Don Cornelius, played by Sinqua Walls, is seen pitching Rowland’s Knight his idea for the music dance show.

“If I can’t convince you to work with me then I lose….everything. So I assure you, this is no game,” Cornelius tells Knight in a passionate speech.

“Now I’m talking about a national television show, written, produced and owned by black folks,” he continues. “I’m talking about bringing us — not whitewashed, not toned-down — but us.  Into millions of homes, like it or not!”

“Black folks the way black folks were meant to be seen,” he promises. “Strong powerful and beautiful. There won’t be another show like it. And it won’t just be mine, it will be all of ours. But I can’t do it alone.”

As previously reported, American Soul follows the story of Cornelius and how he eventually builds his nationally recognized show.

In additionally to Walls and Roland, the series also stars Kelly PriceJason DirdenIantha RichardsonChristopher JeffersonKatlyn Nichol and Jelani Winston.

American Soul premieres on BET on February 5.
