ABC/Eric McCandlessLast night at the Academy Awards, Andra Day’s song from Marshall, “Stand For Something” was competing against Mary J. Blige’s “Mighty River” for Best Original Song. Neither song won, but Andra says she would have enjoyed joining Mary in the studio for her Mudbone track.
“I would have liked to collab with Mary on that,” Day told People.com. She performed “Stand for Something” on the Oscar telecast with Common, after being introduced by Dave Chappelle.
For Day, “Stand for Something,” written by Diane Warren, is especially relevant in 2018.
“The time that we’re in, people [are] not okay with just sitting by and letting things happen to them anymore, and that’s really what the essence of the song is,” she said. “We can talk about it, we can tweet about it, but get in the ring.”
