Lloyd Bishop/NBCAretha Franklin was a surprise guest at a farewell ceremony for outgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder that was held Friday at the Justice Department. The Queen of Soul belted out a rendition of “America the Beautiful” that featured some modified lyrics paying tribute to Holder.
During the song, Franklin sang of Holder’s “courageous integrity,” adding that “he’s a warrior, yes he is.” President Obama, who took the podium to speak at the ceremony, swayed his head while Aretha sang.
Holder announced his resignation this past September, citing personal reasons.
