Although the top nominees of the night included artists like Bruno Mars, H.E.R., SZA and Cardi B, the night ended up being a throwback to 90s music.

The show included appearances and performance from Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe of Bel Biv DeVoe, Jon B., Donell Jones, and Carl Thomas. Fans were later surprised by an appearance by Kid ‘n Play and Al B. Sure!, who made his first public appearance following the death of his son’s mother Kim Porter, who passed away on November 15.

The two share son Quincy Brown, 27, who Kim’s ex Diddy helped to raise with Porter.

The special honors of the night include previous Soul Train host Erykah Badu, who won the Legend award, and Lady of Soul award winner Faith Evans.
