Dave Hogan/Getty ImagesBeyoncé‘s father, Mathew Knowles, was just as shocked to learn about his daughter’s pregnancy as the rest of the world, he tells The Insider‘s Debbie Matenopoulos in a television interview Thursday night.
“I was shocked… I got a first text, and I’m like, ‘Why is this person saying congratulations?’ I didn’t know myself,” he said.
Mathew also reveals in the interview that he called Beyoncé after the news broke, while confirming that the singer is still on target to perform during this year’s Grammy Awards.
“She sounded a little tired, ’cause she’s been working on the Grammy performance,” he added.
Still, Mathew can’t wait to be a grandfather for a third time around: Bey gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy in 2012 and sister Solange is the mother of one child, 12-year-old son Daniel Julez Smith, Jr.
“I’m extremely, extremely proud and happy both for Jay and her,” he said.
Beyoncé announced on Wednesday via Instagram picture that she was pregnant with twins. The surprise announcement elicited a slew of congratulations from fans, celebrities and mother Tina Knowles Lawson, who wrote on Instagram that she no longer had to keep Beyoncé’s pregnancy, secret on social media.
