Beyonce’s Mom Explains the Meaning Behind Lemonade

Kevin Mazur/Getty ImagesBeyonce’s new album, Lemonade, has stirred numerous theories about the hidden meaning, and now an authority has spoken up: her mother.

Tina Knowles-Lawson tells ABC13 in Houston, “People make it all about the cheating and betrayal and, yes, that’s a part of it because that is something you have to heal from. If you really listen to the poetry, it is one of hope and redemption and hopefully that can be healing for people.”

Many people believe the lyrics pertain specifically to Beyonce’s husband, Jay Z, however Knowles-Lawson says the album has a universal appeal. “It could be about anyone’s marriage,” she states. “I think that everybody at one time or another has been betrayed and lied to, and it’s about the pain and it’s about the healing process and it’s about how do you get past that and move on.”

Knowles-Lawson also reveals she experienced her own pain following her divorce from Beyonce’s father, Mathew Knowles, in 2011. She remembers Beyonce and sister Solange comforted her.

“We had a slumber party, we watched old movies all night and ate ice cream,” she recalls. “It was very healing.”
