The singer recently wrote on Tumblr, “Michael Stuhlbarg is my new dad now and that’s that.”

In the movie, set in northern Italy during the summer of 1983, Stuhlbarg plays Mr. Perlman, a professor whose 17-year-old son Elio falls in love with a 24-year-old doctoral student named Oliver.

In one memorable scene, Mr. Perlman gives Elio words of wisdom about love and heartbreak, as part of a monologue that reveals his acceptance of his son’s sexuality.

It’s no wonder that Frank could relate to the movie, and to that scene.

In 2012, he wrote an open letter on Tumblr that detailed his first love at age 19 with another man.

“It changed my life. Back then, my mind would wander to the women I had been with. The ones I cared for and thought I was in love with,” he wrote.

“…He wouldn’t tell me the truth about his feelings for me for another three years. I couldn’t imagine keeping up my life without him.”
