Charlie Wilson is Syleena Johnson’s inspiration on tour

by

Shanachie Entertainment.Syleena Johnson kicked off her Rebirth of Soul tour over the weekend, and when she hits the stage, she hopes to emulate the powerful performances of one of her favorite artists, Charlie Wilson.

“He really takes you on a journey through all of his records,” Johnson tells ABC Radio. “You really get a show, and he gives you his all for an hour and ten minutes and above it, or maybe two hours even.”

“Charlie Wilson is one of the greatest,” she continues, “so I like to try and give a full show of different genres of music.

Johnson’s tour is named after her 2017 album Rebirth of Soul, which features cover of several classics, including Aretha Franklin‘s “Chain of Fools”, “Lonely Teardrops” by Jackie Wilson and “These Arms of Mine” by Otis Redding.

Tour stops include New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

“What I like to do in my shows is take people through a journey of time,” the Grammy Award nominee adds. “I like to take them back to funk, and I try to give them different genres all throughout the show, hip-hop, R&B, funk, soul, pop. I give them all genres of music and I even do covers to kinda intertwine with some of my own records.”

As Johnson tours, she is also co-hosting the daily TV One talk show Sister Circle, which recently celebrated its 200th show and was just renewed for a new season.
