The film, which tells the story of an unconventional pastor ridiculed by his hypocritical congregation after falling in love with a woman with a troubled past, stars Powell as One-Eye, a facilities director who isn’t afraid to call out his holier-than-thou church members. Powell tells ABC Audio that he could “definitely identify” with his bold character.

“I think Christians, good or bad, they get a bad knock because some Christians can be very judgmental,” he says. “I think we have to be very, very careful with any kind of religion.”

“Because you got to understand what religion is all about and what God is all about,” he continues. “God is love. And I think sometimes any of us can get off track when it comes to not judging somebody else.”

Powell, who says the film speaks on such themes as redemption, second chances, and why we shouldn’t judge others, admits that he’s also fallen short.

“I’m sure there have been times in my life as a person who grew up in church, I’m sure that I’ve been judgmental,” he says. “And, I’ve done a lot of spiritual reading in the last few years coming out of my divorce.”

“[But then] being involved in movies like this where you realize you don’t have the right to point fingers at anyone,” he continues. “You don’t walk in those shoes. But, that’s human nature. So this movie speaks on a lot of things. And I think when the audience tunes in, they’re going to be touched.”

Sinners Wanted premieres Sunday, April 5 at 4 p.m. on TV One.
