by

South Coast Music Group/Interscope RecordsTo kick off his 2021, DaBaby not only dropped a music video for his new song, “Masterpiece,” he also uses it to address his 2018 Walmart shooting, one of the most controversial events of his career.

“They just told me that somebody died but it don’t bother me, that’s a G thing/No it don’t bother me, it’s the G way/I don’t know what went down at that Walmart/I don’t know what happened on that freeway/Okay, there go that baby, he back now/Run it back, turn that on replay,” he raps on the record.

DaBaby, whose birth name is Jonathan Kirk, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in 2019 after a fatal 2018 shooting at a Walmart in Huntersville, North Carolina, according to the Charlotte Observer, which killed 19-year-old Jalyn Craig.  Charges against DaBaby were ultimately dismissed.

The “Masterpiece” video features a montage of footage from DaBaby’s 29th birthday celebration last December, including the Mercedes Maybach GLS 600 he purchased for himself.  It also shows the North Carolina rapper on vacation riding through the streets in a red Porsche Ferrari with his new girlfriend, singer/songwriter DaniLeigh, in the passenger seat.

After years of unofficial rumors, DaBaby and DaniLeigh recently went public with their relationship, sharing coupled-up photos on each other’s Instagram last month. Dani choreographed the hip-hop musical style video for DaBaby’s Grammy-nominated hit, “Bop.” The two also collaborated on “Levi High” from DaniLeigh’s 2020 album, Movie.
