Damian Marley and Nas to perform reggae-rap album Distant Relatives on Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise in December

by

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagicThis December, get ready to jam to the sounds of reggae icon Damian Marley and rap visionary Nas, in honor of the 10th anniversary of their Distant Relatives project.

The pair will perform the entire album including hits like “Strong Will Continue” and “Count Your Blessings” on board Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise, with dancehall legend Shabba Ranks, according to an exclusive interview with Billboard. This will be their first performance together in almost 10 years. The cruise will sail from Nov. 30- Dec. 5th and Dec. 5-10, 2020.

Distant Relatives peaked at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip hop Albums and Reggae Albums list. The album combines Nas’ street New York flow and Marley’s Jamaican patois. In an interview with Billboard, Marley refers to this album as “one of the most important projects he’s ever worked on, musically, or lyrically.”

Distant Relatives was ahead of its time in terms of highlighting African culture and music, before Afrobeats became a part of global culture,” Marley shares. “As time goes on, and as we represent the album again this year, I think more people will discover Distant Relatives and its significance will grow.”

The concept for this collaboration album was brought to life by Damian’s manager Dan Dalton, after “Road to Zion” from Marley’ Grammy-winning album Welcome to Jamrock in 2006. “Nas’ rhymes are very street but he has a pan-African consciousness about his music and for Damian, as a Rastafarian, Africa holds great significance,” Dalton shared with Billboard. “Today, there’s an even greater audience for the conversation that Damian and Nas pushed about Africa.”

The official lineup for the Welcome to Jamrock Cruise lineup will be released soon.
