by

Cook County Sheriff’s Dept.Police in Detroit are investigating an allegation by an unidentified woman that she had sex with singer R. Kelly in 2001, when she was 13 years old.

According to ABC affiliate WXYZ TV, the sexual encounter happened in a Detroit-area hotel.

“We are aware of the allegations made against R. Kelly that possibly occurred in 2001,” Detroit Chief of Police James Craig said in a statement to ABC News.  “Approximately a month ago, we’ve receive [sic] information from Chicago Police Department of a victim, who lives out of state, who had made allegation of a criminal sexual conduct incident against R. Kelly. The incident allegedly occurred in the City of Detroit when the victim was 13 years old.”

The statement continues, “Based on the information received we have made several attempts to follow up with her. We have reached out, at the direction of the victim, to her lawyer and we are eagerly waiting to speak with her.”

R. Kelly was jailed in Chicago Wednesday afternoon for his alleged failure to pay $161,000 in back child support.  He must pay that amount in full to be released from custody.  His next court date in that case is March 13.

Wednesday’s arrest comes two weeks after Kelly was jailed for several days after being charged with 10 counts of criminal sexual abuse involving four women, three of whom were said to be minors at the time.  He was freed after a woman who identified herself as a friend of the singer posted 10 percent of Kelly’s million-dollar bond.  Kelly’s next court date in that case is this Friday, March 8.

Kelly denied the charges against him in a sometimes volatile interview with Gayle King that aired Wednesday on CBS This Morning.  That interview will air again Friday night at 8:00 ET/7:00 CT in a one-hour special that’ll include previously unaired interview footage from the sit-down.  It’ll also include parts of King’s interview with Azriel Clary and Joycelyn Savage, women who currently live with R. Kelly.
