BMGDionne Warwick is celebrating the holidays with her all-star album, Dionne Warwick and the Voices of Christmas, and the legendary vocalist is also looking to forward to her annual Christmas feast at home in New Jersey.
“It’s a lot of cooking. A lot of cakes, and pies and all kinds of things,” Dionne tells ABC Audio. “We eat. We watch football. We sing. We play records. We do all that good stuff.”
Warwick’s Christmas album features many of her favorite vocalists, including Johnny Mathis, Aloe Blacc, Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men, Andra Day, Chloe X Halle, Michael McDonald, and jazz star Dianne Reeves. The five-time Grammy winner has a special list of vocalists she listens to at home for her holiday music, and the artist on top of her list is also on her album.
“My mainstay is Johnny Mathis,” Dionne says. “I don’t think anybody can put on any Christmas song without listening to Johnny Mathis.”
Not that Mathis is the only artist that means Christmas to Warwick. She runs down other artists she enjoys during the holidays: “Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Temptations, Barbara Streisand. There’s just so many. Frank Sinatra.”
Warwick began a residency in September at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Shows resume on January 16, with performances through March 1.
