10 Summers/Interscope RecordsElla Mai was determined to work with Chris Brown on her self-titled debut album, and that determination paid off when they recorded the song “Whatchamacallit,” the latest release from the album. The British singer is one of Brown’s biggest fans, and she knew that track would be for perfect for Breezy.
“I had the song and I was like, ‘I don’t want anyone other than Chris Brown on this song,’” Mai tells ABC Radio. “So we waited and waited, and he was listening to ‘Boo’d Up’ on his [Instagram]Story, maybe about a year ago now. We kinda connected organically and then, bam, we were in the studio, and we made ‘Whatchamacallit.'”
The American Music Awards nominee also worked with two more of her favorite artists on the album: H.E.R., and John Legend.
“The song I have H.E.R. on, called ‘Got Feeling,’ I was like, ‘I need you on this,’ ‘cause we’re both very young, up-and-coming R&B artists, and a lot of the time I feel like they try to put women against each other.”
“She’s an amazing vocalist, an amazing person, and at the end of the day my friend,” Mai says of H.E.R. “So I was glad to work with her, and of course, John Legend is amazing.” (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)
Legend is featured on a track called “Everything” on Mai’s gold certified album.
She celebrated her 24th birthday on Saturday, and now she’s looking forward to performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 22 in New York City.
