Ella Mai is humbled that so many men love “Boo’d Up”

by

Interscope RecordsAs it remains at the top of the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart, Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” has become one of the  love songs of the summer, and the British singer is pleasantly surprised so many men love the tune.

“It’s so humbling and I’m just so grateful. I didn’t expect men to love it the way they do,” Mai tells Essence. “I thought it was definitely going to be a something for the women and men have taken it and just ran with it and we can’t have it anymore!”

Mai performed Saturday night at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, and received an overwhelming response to her number one song.

The 23-year-old singer reflects on how “Boo’d’ Up” has continued to gain momentum since she released it last year.

“I definitely didn’t expect it at all. I’m just glad that everyone loves it as much as I do,” she says. “Last year, I was on tour with Kehlani and it wasn’t even in my set because it was so new and as the tour went on, more people kept asking me, ‘Why isn’t ‘Boo’d Up’ in your set? Why isn’t ‘Boo’d Up’ in your set?’ So I added it and this year it’s just like taken off.”

Following several new versions of the song, the official remix recently dropped featuring Nicki Minajand Quavo of Migos. Mai is flattered by all the versions, however she does have a preference.

T-Pain murdered it!,” Mai says. “There’s so many different ones, Plies, all of them, Fabulous just put one out. There’s so many different ones and it’s like hard to keep up because there’s like a new one every day. But yeah, I think T-Pain would probably be my favorite.”
