Erykah Badu Recalls When She First Became Friends with Drake

by

Erica Parise /Warner Bros. Television:

They’ve referred to one another in their songs, but now we know exactly how Erykah Badu and Drake first became friends.

During Wednesday’s edition of The Real, Badu revealed that their friendship began six years ago after the rapper agreed to do something special for her son, Seven Sirius.

“I didn’t really know Drake very well, but I knew he was coming to town,” she explained. “And my oldest, Seven Sirius…was in sixth grade at the time, but I knew [he] was his favorite artist. Drake was his favorite artist.  And I got in touch with Drake and I asked him if he could visit my son’s school to talk to his class. And he did it!”

You may recall that Seven Sirius is Erykah’s son with André 3000 of OutKast.

Badu continues that Drake was “so gracious and so articulate and so open and forthcoming.  And the children were really inspired.  So that’s how we first became good friends.”

Erykah acknowledges Drizzy on her rendition of “Hotline Bling,” which will appear on her new mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone, due out Black Friday. The project, inspired by a line from her 1997 hit “Tyrone,” will be available exclusively on iTunes for one week, and then go to other digital retailers on December 4.

Here’s the official track listing:

“U Use To Call Me”
