From So So Def to tone deaf: Jermaine Dupri reflects on ‘Making the Band’ tryouts in Atlanta

Paras Griffin/Getty ImagesThe rebooted reality show Making the Band launched its first set of auditions in Atlanta over the weekend with a gang of celebrity guest judges including MonicaDallas Austin, Quality Control’s Coach K and Pierre ThomasMigos‘ Quavo, and Grammy award-winning producers Brian Michael Cox and Jermaine Dupri.

On Twitter Tuesday night, Dupri reflected on the series auditions, writing, “One of the things that I notice and learned going to the #makingoftheband try outs, is that kids are using auto tune so much. The understanding of being tone deaf is gone and people be singing in all kinda keys.”

He added, “lol this is really a epidemic.” 

Sean “Diddy” Combs set social media ablaze last month when he announced the MTV series reboot with The Combs Cartel as judges. The music mogul made his mission clear on Instagram, writing, “It’s time we bring R&B back, restore that feeling! Music that will touch your souls!!!!!!!?”

In its heyday, the famed reality TV series gave us acts like Danity Kane, Day26, Donnie Klang and Da Band.

The next auditions for Making the Band take place in Houston on March 7, 2020.
