HBO announces premiere date for Robin Thede and Issa Rae’s ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’

In a new tweet, Thede shared the good news with fans.

“A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW premieres AUGUST 2 on @hbo!,” Thede wrote. “Fridays at 11pm! Follow @BlackLadySketch!”

She continued, ” I created #ablss to amplify just some of the many incredible black ladies in comedy and am so proud of it!! ALSO IT’S FUNNY AF. #ablackladysketchshow.”

The half-hour series is billed as the first sketch comedy written by, directed by and starring black women. It will feature narrative sketches performed by the core cast of Thede, Quinta BrunsonAshley Nicole Black and Gabrielle Dennis, as well as celebrity guests.

The show will also be written and directed by a variety of black women, including Lauren Ashley Smith, the head writer of Thede’s former BET late-night show, The Rundown. Smith will also co-produce.

The new series falls under Rae’s overall production deal with HBO.

This is the latest project for Thede, whose late night show was cancelled after one season. Prior to that, the comedian served as a head writer and correspondent for The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore on Comedy Central.
