Following his Grammy win for Best Gospel Album, PJ Morton joins Jon Batiste and jazz legend Trombone Shorty on “BoyHood.”
The three New Orleans natives expound upon the musical essence and influence of their hometown, while mentioning a few Louisiana notables such as Popeye’s, among others.
“Could still see me ballin’ from New York down to New Orleans,” sings PJ on the chorus. “It’s time for Zula so we better get going, no place like New Orleans / I said I’m far from home but I always represent.”
“BoyHood” was taken from Batiste‘s new album, WE ARE, which is out today. According to a press release, the album was recorded in his hometown as well as in New York and Los Angeles. It was mostly planned in a week from Batiste’s dressing room at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he’s the bandleader and musical director.
The Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated artist said although he’s already “publicly known for some things,” he has so much more to offer.
“Now is the time to show the world my full artistry,” says Batiste in a statement. “WE ARE is a message of love for humanity, of humble reverence for our past, and of a hopeful future, in which we are the ones who can save us. The art reveals its motive to you. You just have to wait for the Spirit to tell you what it wants.”
Meanwhile, multi-Grammy-winner H.E.R. turned her single, “Hold Us Together,” into a hopeful remixwith Grammy nominated Christian singer Tauren Wells. The two acclaimed singer/songwriters blend their fresh voices to carry out the song’s comforting lyrics, as heard on the soundtrack of the Disney+ film, Safety.
