I just wanted to do my best Aaliyah impression: Sevyn Streeter explains meaning behind Before I Do

by

Dennis LeupoldOne of Sevyn Streeter’s newest songs, “Before I Do,” from her debut album Girl Disrupted, in an interpolation of late Aaliyah‘s 1994 song, “At Your Best.”

Explaining her take on the song in a new video for Genius’ Verified series, Sevyn says, “I just wanted to do my best Aaliyah impression, truth be told. ‘Cause I love how she made us feel.”

Sevyn’s songs, which is about confronting a guy she’s interested in with his rumored past, adds that she “just wanted to stay very true to what the narrative is saying.”

“It’s just very straight-to-the-point. It’s a very, not beating around the bush type of song. Every time you enter into a new relationship, what’s the first thing that we do? We go on Instagram, we go on Twitter, we try to find out who this person dated before us. We hear little things here and there about their past,” she says.
