I Love You, You Love Me, Get Out: Daniel Kaluuya producing live-action Barney the dinosaur movie

by

Prince Williams/WireimageOscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya is partnering with Mattel to produce a live-action film based on the company’s famous purple dinosaur, Barney.

“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” the star of Black Panther and Get Out tells Variety “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

Mattel chose Kaaluya because it felt that he would bring a different perspective to the story of Barney, who became a children’s icon as the star of the Barney & Friends TV series, which ran on PBS from 1992-2009.

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to ‘Barney’ that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” say Mattel’s Robbie Brenner. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

In addition to the Barney project, the British actor stars with Bokeem Woodbine in Queen & Slim, opening November 27. Kaluuya will also portray Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton in the upcoming biopic Jesus Was My Homeboy.
