It wasn’t a planned reunion: Kandi Burruss sets record straight about reuniting with Xscape

by

DeWayne Rogers/Monami EntertainmentThe ladies of Xscape were recently caught on a camera in a awkward position on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, when Kandi Burruss revealed she wasn’t recording new music with the group.

Part of the reason may be, as she tells People, that Xscape’s reunion — both on their new reality show Xscape: Still Kickin’ It and their forthcoming tour — wasn’t planned.

“What happened was a network was going to do an unauthorized movie about us, and of course I’m not going to let somebody just take my legacy,” Kandi says.

“So I called my group members and we were all able to have a conversation to start trying to get our story told the right way.”

Kandi adds that the only reason the group came back into the spotlight was because bandmate Tamika Scott publicly apologized to Kandi for claiming in the past that she slept with Jermaine Dupri and Dupri’s father, Scream Nation CEO Michael Mauldin.

Kandi says, “I was like, I need a public apology. She’s going to have to say to the world that the stuff that she said about me was a lie.”

“And so in doing that — we did it on the radio — and the radio disc jockey, he’s like, ‘Oh Xscape is back!’ I was like, ‘Xscape is not back!'”

“All of a sudden we started getting all these offers to perform and do shows, so I just went with the flow for the moment,” Kandi says.

Xscape’s 22-date The Great Xscape Tour kicks off November 22 in Richmond, Virginia and their new reality series, Xscape: Still Kickin’ It, airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
