Sarah McColganThe 59th annual Grammy Awards air Sunday, and Ro James is one of the artists nominated, in the category of Best R&B Performance.
The “Permission” vocalist, who is currently on the road for his first headlining tour, tells ABC Radio that he first ignored all of the countless messages regarding his nomination because he was tired.
“I was actually on tour and I just got into our next place and was falling asleep and my phone just kept ringing and ringing and ringing and I was ignoring it. I’m like. ‘I’m not gonna answer.’ And it kept ringing and I finally picked it up and it was one of my friends,” he says.
“She was like, ‘Congratulations!’ I’m like. ‘On what?’ She’s like, ‘On your Grammy nomination.’ I’m like, ‘What!’ It’s definitely an indescribable feeling,” he adds.
Ro also states that he previously refused to be a part of the glitz and glamour of the awards ceremony as a guest, because he wanted his first experience at the Grammys to be at the ceremony as a nominee.
“I’ve been invited to the Grammys with other friends who were nominated. I’m like, ‘Naw, I’m not gonna go until it’s my time.’ And who knew it was gonna be, like, the next year? It’s crazy,” he says.
Ro is just happy to be recognized for his hard work.
“It just shows that you’re being appreciated or respected for your work and that you’re up there with your peers. Everybody doing it. Shout out to all of my peers that have been Grammy nominated. It’s just an honor to be in the conversation.”
