Janelle Monáe is sick to her stomach watching Megan Thee Stallion defend her July shooting incident

Emilio CoochieJanelle Monáe says she felt “sick to my stomach” over Megan Thee Stallion‘s July shooting incident, involving Tory Lanez.

The Grammy-nominated artist virtually appeared on the Jemele Hill is Unbothered podcast on Monday, where she discussed the “victim-blaming” Megan experienced on social media after opening up about being shot.

“I’m sick to my stomach around the victim-blaming that was going on around Meg the Stallion, and she is strong,” Monáe shared. “But she should not have to go through that. She should not have to prove to people who thought that she was lying, that she wasn’t lying.”

“Violence under any kind should be condemned. It’s not a gender issue,” the “Turntables” singer continued. “It needs to be condemned. And I think that when we’re talking about Black women, we are disproportionately affected by it.”

In a fiery Instagram Live last month, Megan named Tory as the person who shot her in both feet on the morning of July 12. Not longer after, several insensitive memes began to circulate on social media poking fun at her traumatic experience.

“Black women are so unprotected & we hold so many things in to protect the feelings of others w/o considering our own,” Megan tweeted, at the time. “It might be funny to y’all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about but this is my real life and I’m real-life hurt and traumatized.”

Monáe said the key to creating an open space for Black women’s vulnerability is to “have conversations with more men about how you can be [more] supportive, how you can show up better for Black women and other folks who may not be as privileged as you are in this world.”
