Janelle Monae is trapped in a slavery to present day nightmare in new horror film, ‘Antebellum’

by

LionsgateJanelle Monae’s nightmare becomes reality in the mysterious trailer for the upcoming horror film, Antebellum, which was released Thursday.

As the title indicates, the movie has a pre-Civil War setting, and cuts back and forth to present day. Janelle portrays a successful author who is “trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late,” according to the film’s synopsis.

In the trailer, we see her as a slave working in a field, as well as a modern day woman with a young daughter. As the scenes rapidly flip from the past to the present, a 911 operator responds to a call, but no one answers. The voice says, “Are you there? Is anyone with you? Can you get to a safe area?,” as Monae is terrorized when a hand covers her mouth.

The Screen Actors Guild award winner for Hidden Figures has a heavy acting slate as she’s currently featured in the Harriet Tubman biopic, Harriet. The singer/actress also joins Tessa Thompson as one of the voices for the live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp, and she’s starring in the Gloria Steinem biopic, The Glorias, opening January 1.

Antebellum will debut in theaters April 24, 2020.
