Janet Jackson and Aretha Franklin honored at BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta

Solaiman FazelTwo music legends, Janet Jackson, and the late Aretha Franklin, were honored Thursday night at the 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta.

Janet received the BMI Icon Award, and she was surprised on stage by her good friend, Missy Elliott, who praised her with a speech including lyrics from her songs, according to Variety.

Miss Jackson was also treated to performance of four of her classics: Jussie Smollett sang “That’s the Way Love Goes,” Teyana Taylor performed “I Get Lonely,” Justine Skye sang “Let’s Wait Awhile,” and Normani rocked “The Pleasure Principle.”

Missy praised Normani on Twitter, posting a photo of the two of them with the comment, “Normani you are a genuine spirit & a INCREDIBLE talent! May God continue to Bless & cover you sis.” Missy also posted a photo with Janet.

The Queen of Soul was remembered by Tamela Mann, who performed “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” from Aretha’s 1956 album, Songs of Faith, followed by “You’ve Got a Friend.”
