JAY-Z working on new album of unreleased Prince songs for 2019 release

by

ABC/Randy HolmesJAY-Z is working on an album of unreleased Prince music, which will be released next year, Billboard reports.

The rapper is helping choose which songs from the late musician’s immense catalog will go onto the album. Once complete, the music will stream on JAY-Z’s Tidal service for two weeks. After seven days, the album will be available for download.

“Our only goal is to share Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted,” JAY-Z said in a statement. “After thoughtful and honest conversation with him, he chose Tidal as his partner for HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two, and we will continue to respect and honor Prince’s enduring legacy and wishes with this new collection.”

The announcement comes after Prince’s estate and Tidal were in a legal dispute. Tidal believed it made an agreement to stream Prince’s entire catalog. However, the service only has access to the singer’s music post 1996.

Troy Carter of The Prince Estate said he is excited to continue the partnership with the streaming company.

“I’m very pleased this is resolved, and we get to honor the relationship between Prince and Tidal with this album,” he said. “We look forward to fans hearing the new music and experiencing the genius of Prince.”

Prince’s estate is also releasing a full-length album of Prince’s songs with Warner Bros. Records this September.
