Jennifer Hudson is featured in the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, in which she speaks about her Broadway debut in a revival of The Color Purple.

The singer reveals her thoughts on portraying Shug Avery in the classic story. “I have butterflies taking on this role, but I like that.  I never second guessed it — I just hopped right in.  She is such a different funky character for me and I was very attached to book and the film,” Jennifer tells the mag.

Hudson also shares that her family is enjoying living in New York while she rehearses for the role.  “We love seeing musicals.  We’ve made it to The Lion King and Wicked already,” she says. “My son says, ‘Mommy, this feels like home!”

She adds she’s making sure to take care of her voice: “Plenty of rest, and I drink lots of warm water with lemon and honey.”

The Color Purple, which also stars Orange Is the New Black‘s Danielle Brooks as Sofia, has begun previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York City.

The O, The Oprah Magazine issue hits newsstands on November 17.
