Jennifer Hudson Joins Cast of Spike Lee’s Chicago Musical Chiraq

by

Heather Wines/CBSJennifer Hudson has landed a new acting gig. The singer is scheduled to perform in Spike Lee‘s upcoming film Chiraq, according to Screen Daily.

Hudson will join an all-star cast that includes fellow Illinois natives Common and John Cusack, as well as Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Piven.  The upcoming “musical comedy” is based on Aristophanes‘ classic Greek play Lysistrata, in which the women of Athens withheld sex from the men to force a peace treaty ending the Peloponnesian War. Lee’s project will be reimagined in modern day Chicago instead of ancient Athens with city-state violence rather a war against Sparta.

Despite early reports, Kanye West will not appear in the project, which is being produced by Amazon Studios and currently being shopped for international distribution at Cannes.
