Jhené Aiko and Big Sean are officially back together after breaking up last year.  Around the time of their split, Aiko released the breakup song “Triggered,” which many assumed was about Big Sean — but it turns out they assumed wrong.

In an interview with Essence, the 29-year-old singer reveals that the song was not 100% about the Detroit rapper, but admits their relationship did influence it.  And he evidently heard himself in it, too.

Recalling Sean’s initial reaction after hearing the song, Aiko says. “He was just like, ‘Wow, I’m not your friend.’ I was like, ‘Well, I was feeling that in the moment. This is just a song. This is not 100% about you.'”

“Those are the things that I may feel, and I know that they are irrational and coming from just an angry emotional place, but that’s what’s so beautiful about art is that you can just throw paint on a blank canvas, and do something crazy and that’s your release,” she explains. “You didn’t hurt anyone, you know?”

As for why she bothered playing Sean the song, she explains, “I feel like, especially because we have a personal relationship, and a true friendship, that’s why I could play it for him, and be like, ‘Yeah, sorry. I kind of went really hard, but don’t think that this is a personal letter to you.’”

Aiko also discussed her new album, how she feels about regarding social media, and her past marriage to producer Dot Da Genius, which inspired Trip‘s “Never Call Me.”

Her third studio album Chilombo, is set for release on March 6, with features from NasMiguelFutureJohn LegendTy Dolla $ign, Big Sean and more.  Jhené Aiko revealed that the album’s track list was handwritten by her dad.
