John Legend wanted to put together the perfect soundscape for the forthcoming WGN show, Underground, which he helped executive produce.

In an official promo video, Legend explains why the music was an important part of the Civil War drama, which follows a group of slaves who formulate  plan to escape from a plantation.

“Part of my job as executive produce is to curate the music of the show,” Legend said in a behind-the-scenes clip. “We’re altogether trying to create a soundscape that fits with the show’s urgency and power.”

Raphael Saadiq also contributed to the film as a composer and added: “We find the love in the music to make it come alive.”

The music will include sound bites from contemporary songs like Kanye West‘s “Black Skinhead” as well as classics like Johnny Cash‘s “I Got Shoes.”

Underground premieres on WGN on March 9 at 10 p.m. ET.
