K Camp Reveals Why He Put Hip Hop Veterans on Debut Album, Only Way Is Up

Family Ties Entertainment/Interscope RecordsIt’s been a long time coming, but Atlanta-bred rapper K Camp is out with his debut album, Only Way Is Up. The 16-track LP features hip-hop heavyweights such as Snoop Dogg and Bun B. So why did the new rapper collaborate with some of the biggest names in music on his first offering? Camp says “it made sense.”

“I’m getting stamped from the west. That’s Snoop; he runs the west. I’m getting stamped from the south. That’s Bun B, UGK. That’s legendary!” he exclaims to ABC Radio. “And I got French [Montana] on there and that’s New York.”

Still, his favorite collab on the album is with Snoop on “Rolling.” K Camp says that collaboration meant so much to him because he respects West Coast hip-hop music in general.

“I love the West Coast sound. That’s just me being a young jip from back in the day. I’m a big fan of the [ThaDogg Pound, Snoop, [Dr.Dre, the whole movement they had, N.W.A., all that s***. It’s what I grew up on,” he explains. “Because I didn’t just listen to Atlanta music coming up. I was all over the place. And the West always had their own lane and always had their own sound. They’re still holding the torch now.”

K Camp points to West Coast artists such as YG and Ty Dolla Sign who are continuing that legacy. “I f*** with them,” he adds for emphasis.

When music lovers listen to Camp’s debut album, he says he wants them to get a better sense of who he is.

“I want them to feel me,” he adds. “I want them to know where I’m coming from. I want them to really just sit back and appreciate the music. Because we live in a world, in a time where motherf*****s don’t appreciate the music no more. They just want the gimmicks. They just want the bull**** on Instagram and social media and what I’m trying to bring is just the music back.”

Only Way Is Up, also featuring collaborations with JeremihT.I.Yo Gotti, Fetty Wap, and CyHi The Prynce, is out Friday.
