Kandi Burruss has begun a new chapter in her career, starting with making her Broadway debut as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton in the Tony award-winning musical Chicago. The performer tells ABC Radio how she was cast in the role, adding that portraying the iconic character “feels amazing.”

“The way that it came about was, I was actually auditioning for a TV musical and I had to submit a song from a Broadway show. So I auditioned with the Mama Morton ‘When You’re Good to Mama’ song.”

“My agent liked it so much that he said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna send it to the Chicago team to see what they think’ and they liked me and they asked me to come in for a face-to-face audition. So, you know, I was super excited when that happened.”

Sure enough, Kandi scored the part. The Xscape singer adds that the performing aspect of being on Broadway, when it comes to singing at least, is “easy because I just came off of a tour with my group.”

She further explains, “[The Xscape set is] an hour long, an hour and fifteen minute long show where we’re just singing and dancing the whole time.”

Speaking of Xscape, Kandi’s stated in the recent past that she’s no longer recording songs with her fellow group mates and won’t be featured on their forthcoming album. However, she explains that this decision isn’t indicative of a rift between her and the rest of the ladies.

“I mean, I love my group, so I don’t want people to think it’s a negative thing. I don’t plan on doing any new music with the group. That doesn’t mean I’m not doing new music. I will be doing new music. But I just don’t wanna do another group album.”
