EssenceIt’s been four years since Kelis released her most recent album, Food, and the 39-year old singer says she is happy to be out of the spotlight.
“Anyone who knows me knows I can take fame or leave it,” the Grammy nominee says in the cover story for the new Essence global beauty issue. “I can walk away from all of this and never look back. Being famous has never validated me — ever. I’ve never cared if people liked me or didn’t like me. Either way, I’m cool.”
After beginning her recording career in 1999 and releasing six albums, Kelis expanded her brand. She designed a line of fashion accessories, hosted the Saucy and Sweet show on the Cooking Channel, and published a cookbook. She says she strives to be versatile.
“The only way you are really ever going to be truly content is if you are constantly evolving,” Kelis says.
The “Milkshake” singer married Nas in 2005, and they divorced in 2010. As previously reported, in April, she accused him of domestic violence, and he recently responded with a lengthy Instagram post denying her allegations. Last week, Kelis clapped back, commenting that her statement about Nas abusing her is not false.
“It’s not my truth babe, it’s THE truth. Period. I know, he knows it and most of all GOD knows it,” she commented on Instagram. “I am truly grateful and happy I escaped a horrendous situation and that I am in love and my boys are delicious perfect children.”
The Essence global beauty issue featuring Kelis on the cover will be on newsstands Friday.
