by

Chris Craymer/Parents MagazineFormer Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland is scared to raise her own child, 18-month-old sonTitan, in America.

Rowland voiced her mothering fears at the 2016 ESSENCE Festival on Sunday, during a Verizon-sponsored panel event in New Orleans, Louisiana. People reports that once the entertainer received the news that she was pregnant with a boy, she began to feel scared for his journey as a black male in the United States.

“I remember being pregnant with Titan and the moment the doctor said ‘It’s a boy’ and there were all these shootings happening with our young men. I just began to weep,” she said.

Rowland wants parents of young black males to know that she relates to their struggle and that their children have value in this world.

“Our boys matter and their futures matter and they are our future CEO’s and they can do whatever they put their mind to and we have to let them know that,” she said.

Last week, Rowland posted a sweet photograph of her son on Instagram, roaming in a green field.
