Kendrick Lamar explains why it takes him so long to release new music

by

Prince Williams/WireimageIt’s been three years since Kendrick Lamar‘s Grammy- and Pulitzer Prize-winning last album, DAMN, and fans are wondering what’s taking the mega hip-hop star “so long” to release a new project.

In an interview with rising rapper Baby Keem for the 40th anniversary issue of i-D magazine, Kendrick admitted he spends at least an entire year executing a “new sound” to introduce to his loyal fans.

“I can’t do the same thing over and over. I need something to get me excited,” Kendrick explained, adding that he would never do a sequel to any of his albums.

“I remember the sophomore jinx of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City; it was for that year and for that time,” he continued. “I was in a different space in my life. I already knew off the top I can’t make Good Kid, M.A.A.D City Part Two.”

Kendrick said it would be “corny” if he did a sequel, which would take “the feeling away from the first.”  “I need that [album] to live in its own world,” the Top Dawg Entertainment CEO added.

So when can we expect a new Kendrick Lamar album?

“Pretty soon,” according to Top Dawg Entertainment President Punch, who responded to fans on Twitter.

“As in soon soon,” he continued in another tweet, in response to a fan’s question.
