Kerry Washington took her new miniseries to Hulu because of the passion in the room

by

ABC/ Heidi GutmanAfter seven seasons as a network TV star on ScandalKerry Washington decided to bypass broadcast and cable TV and sign with the Hulu streaming service for her new miniseries, Little Fires Everywhere.

“Hulu was the winner for us, not only because of the passion in the room, but the data indicated to us how direct our relationship could be with the audience,” she said Monday at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Washington and Reese Witherspoon co-star and serve as the executive producers of the eight-episode mini-series, which is based on the best-selling 2017 novel by Celeste Ng.

Kerry added that research convinced her Hulu was the best platform because it “indicated to us that we knew where people were going to watch me already, we knew where people were watching Reese, and we knew who would be into the content we were creating.”

Little Fires Everywhere tells the story of Shaker Heights, Ohio’s Richardson family. Washington stars as Mia Warren, a single mother whose landlord is Witherspoon’s character, Elena Richardson.

The four time NAACP Image Award winner is also producing a series about male models titled Mannequin Life.

She explains, “It’s about men who feel ‘less than’ because they’re in a community where there is not pay equity, and they’re dealing with a lot of issues that are traditionally thought of as women’s issues, like eating disorders.”

Washington says the goal of her company, Simpson Street Productions, is to shine a light on segments of society which are being ignored.

“We’re invested in telling stories about anybody who is in a disenfranchised community,” she says. “Anybody whose story has been thought of as peripheral, putting that story at the center of the content.”
