Khalid soars high with new album, ‘Free Spirit’

Columbia Records

Khalid‘s sophomore album, Free Spirit, has finally arrived.

Dialing in at 16 tracks, the effort features the previously released singles “Talk,” “Self,” and “Don’t Pretend.” While Khalid steers much of the project on his own, the LP boasts a guest spot from John Mayer.

Serving as the follow-up to his debut American Teen, which the 21-year-old describes as a “very safe” project, Free Spirit is composed of more serious subject matter, with sentimental undertones.

Beginning with the opening track, “Intro,” Khalid takes a very solemn approach, as does the record’s production. The same can be said of the 12th track, “Twenty-One,” an apparent sequel to his debut album’s “8TEEN.” Where the original track celebrated the freedom of youthful love, this one is a plea for companionship, with Khalid crying out: “I’m in pain, and I’m to blame”.

In conjunction with Free Spirit‘s release, the Grammy-nominated R&B crooner will hit the road for his Free Spirit World Tourwhich kicks off in Phoenix June 20.

Free Spirit is now available for streaming via the usual outlets.
