“He really wanted his mother’s name and I love that name too,” Kim said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “ I just wasn’t sure if it’s so much to live up to.”

Kim explained that like their children North, age four, and two-year old Saint, they wanted a one-syllable name for their third child. When they thought of Kanye’s hometown, the name clicked.

“Obviously he’s from Chicago,” Kim said. “That is a place that made him and a place he remembers his family from… I just felt that Chicago was cool and different.”

Kim and Kanye call Chicago “Chi” to continue their one-syllable family tradition. Chicago was born via a surrogate.  Kim watched the birth, but says Kanye wasn’t even in the room.

“When the baby came out, I made Kourtney be in the room,” she said. “We had a connecting room and Kanye was in there playing Connect Four with his friends and not really paying attention.”
