The illustrated book was inspired by LeBron James Family Foundation’s I Promise program in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. In a statement to Essence, the three-time champ said, “Books have the ability to teach, inspire and bring people together. That’s why these books, and the opportunity to get children and parents reading together, mean so much to me.”

“Most importantly, we wanted to make sure these stories are ones that every single kid can see themselves in. I Promise is powerful in that way and I can’t wait for people to read it.”

Aside from his sports and television ventures, James is an avid reader and advocate for enhancing the educational resources and opportunities for at-risk youth, starting with his I Promise public school. Opened in 2018, the STEM-focused program encourages every student to earn a full scholarship, granted they graduate with a high school diploma. Last week, his foundation announced eligible students would receive free tuition at Kent State University.

I Promise is now available for pre-order and expected to hit stores everywhere August 11. The second book is already in the works and can be expected in 2021.
