In a statement to People, a rep for Waithe confirmed that the couple, who married last year after three years of dating, have officially separated.
“After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” the couples said in a joint statement. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
The couple’s breakup comes after Waithe revealed on Ellen in November 2019 that the two had recently gotten married.
“We snuck and did it, you know,” Waithe told John Legend, who served as the guest host for the episode. “We didn’t make any announcements.”
As previously reported, Waithe proposed to Mayo on Thanksgiving Day 2017 while in Tokyo.
“She definitely helps to keep me grounded,” Waithe said of Mayo on The Dave Chang Show in 2018. “When I get home from winning an Emmy, she’s like, ‘Don’t forget to take out the recycling.’ It’s those things that I think are really helpful. She’s so laid back about it all.”
