Lena Waithe reveals she’s tied the knot with long-time girlfriend Alana Mayo

by

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Lena Waithe is officially off the market.

The Queen & Slim writer revealed on Friday’s The Ellen DeGeneres show that she’s married her longtime partner Alana Mayo.

“We snuck and did it, you know,” she told John Legend, who served as the guest host for the episode. “We didn’t make any announcements.”

Waithe also offered a few details on their nuptials, which she said took place at San Francisco City Hall, a place of extreme importance to the LGBTQ community. It is the location where gay right’s activist and politician Harvey Milk was killed. Following Milk’s death, protesters began to riot outside of the courthouse in support of Milk and LGBTQ rights. It is also the location where the first legal same-sex marriage ceremony was officiated in 2004.

“We went to the courthouse. Got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. It was her idea, as all good things are,” Waithe said. “And she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there.’ And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.'”

“It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing, but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that,” she continued, explaining that all people should have the opportunity to celebrate those special moments. “Everybody should be able to do that.”

As previously reported, Waithe proposed to Mayo on Thanksgiving Day 2017 while in Tokyo. The Emmy-winner told People last year that she wanted very low-key wedding.

“It’s going to be super small, crazy small,” she said at the time. “It’s almost like an excuse to have fun with our friends.”
