Laretta Houston for VH1 Letoya Luckett stars as Felicia Price on VH1’s hit drama, Single Ladies. The former Destiny’s Child band member portrays the series’ resident mean girl as a high-powered music manager. Luckett says she’s loves tapping into her evil side for her first regular TV role.
“She’s cold blooded,” the 32-year-old tells ABC News Radio. “I think a lot of people…love her. They love to hate her but I try to put a comedic spin on it just a tad bit so people won’t hate me at the end of the day. But as you keep watching you get to know her and you get to know why she is the way she is. And that’s what I want people to do, you know, grow with her.”
Luckett had it easy when doing research for her role as she’s been managed by many in the music industry, including Beyonce‘s father Mathew Knowles. She famously wanted to obtain another manager besides Knowles and ended up getting kicked out of Destiny’s Child at the height of their success.
“I’ve had a lot of great managers in my life and I was definitely able to take from them,” she says. “And these are managers that can change…not only your career, but who you are as a person and help to mold you as an artist. So I was blessed to be able to have those experiences with them and I was able to grab from those experiences.”
Although Luckett is starring in Single Ladies, she hasn’t given up on her music career, however. In fact, she’s currently working on an album and her song, “Don’t Make Me Wait,” will be featured on the Feb. 10 episode of the VH1 series. Luckett says the song is about her approach to dating men.
“I’m a shy girl. Like, I would never have the guts to go and approach a guy. I’m a weirdo. So if you clearly see that I’m feeling you, even though I’m not walking over there, but my body language and my eyes [are] saying so, then you need to come on with it,” she explains, adding, “Approach me child! Don’t let the time pass by.”
And it seems the Houston native is still looking for her Mr. Right, but she’s just fine with her single status. “I won’t be alone forever,” she says of her romantic life. “I know there’s somebody for everybody and I will just be patient and wait.”
“Of course there’s cold nights. I hate sleeping with my pillow all the time. But I’d rather wait on the right relationship rather than being scared of being alone,” she continues. “Like, I’m not that girl at all. I go to the movies by myself. I do everything by myself.”
Single Ladies airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.
