Lil Nas X, Normani, City Girls, Jack Harlow and Polo G were among the honorees at Variety‘s Hitmakers Brunch in Los Angeles Saturday.

The Innovator of the Year Award was presented to Lil Nas by Chloe Bailey.

“By being exactly who he is and commanding attention, by creating a universe that is both undeniable and exceptionally entertaining, he’s kicked in the door,” Bailey said.

“It was very scary to try to follow up and keep it going,” the “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” rapper said about following up his RIAA 15-times Platinum, 2019 breakthrough hit, “Old Town Road.” “I came out. I was myself. I did what I needed to do. I put effort into every single part of my career.”

Normani received the Collaborator Award for her work with Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and more, thanked and her presenter, choreographer Sean Bankhead, for being one who “pushes me to get uncomfortable, which unlocks the parts of me that used to scare me.”

City Girls, aka Yung Miami and JT, took home the Future is Female Award. “We are like normal girls. Some days we want to be rappers, the next day we want to be what we is,” JT commented in receiving the honor.

Harlow, who after recording for ten years became a star this year with his “Industry Baby” collabo with Lil Nas X, was honored as Hitmaker of Tomorrow, and Polo G received the Rising Star Award.
