by

Andrew MacPhersonWherever he is, Lionel Richie must be dancing on the ceiling.  The pop/R&B singer has scored his first #1 album on the U.K. chart in more than 23 years, as his compilation The Definitive Collection, has jumped to the top spot following Richie’s acclaimed June 28 performance at the Glastonbury Festival.

The 2003 retrospective, which features highlights from Richie’s solo career and from his tenure with The Commodores, leaped from the 103rd slot to #1 after an amazing 1,763-percent increase in combined sales over the past week, OfficialCharts.com reports.  The Definitive Collection previously peaked at #10 in the U.K. at the time of its 2003 release.

“I was overwhelmed performing at Glastonbury in front of all those people and for the fans to make the album Number 1 is ‎unbelievable,” Richie tells OfficialCharts.com.  “The U.K. has always been a special place for me, thank you, I love you all.”

The last time Lionel reached the top spot on the U.K. album tally was in 1992, with his Back to Front compilation.  Richie scored a #1 album in the U.S. in 2012 with his most recent studio effort, the country duets collection Tuskegee.
