Lizzo reveals “Truth Hurts” was inspired by a depressing voicemail

by

Atlantic RecordsLizzo is ruling the Billboard 100 chart with her number one single, “Truth Hurts,” and she remembers it was inspired by her ex-boyfriend breaking up with her on a voicemail.

The 31-year-old rapper/singer says she was so depressed, she did not want to go to the studio. She told the story to producer Ricky Reed who wrote down her words and convinced her to record the lyrics.

“I literally just kind of went in the booth and laid down everything verbatim that I had said about this person who had hurt me and I just said it to music,” Lizzo tells Billboard.

Lizzo remembers a Minnesota Vikings player was sending her messages on social media, which led her to write about the football star in the song.

“I was going through the chorus and I was like, ‘New man on the Minnesota Vikings ha ha and it was like something more exciting,’ you know that rhymes with Vikings. I needed something more exciting,” she continues. “I was listening through I was like, truth hurts boy. Truth hurts and then he was like, ‘Yeah. That’s the song right there.”

“Truth Hurts” has been at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. It set a record as the female solo rap song with most consecutive weeks at number one, surpassing Cardi B‘s “Bodak Yellow.”
